Tanzania Time

1:13 am and I still haven't finished all my packing. The screen is blurry from the fatigue so I doubt I'll be able to write anything very interesting. I just want to say goodnight and goodbye and wish me luck! I will blog and inform you all as much as possible, although I doubt that will be very much. But I promise I'll try.

A lot of people called me tonight to know how I'm feeling. I'm just so tired from the last few days, so wired from packing and thinking and re-thinking and planning, that there hasn't been much room for much more than the here and now. The next minute, the next item, the next task.

I can't really say right now that I'm SUPER excited, only that I feel that I'm on the verge of something big, sort of like standing on the edge of a cliff, or maybe more like standing on top of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Le 12 décembre 2010, je tenterai de faire l’ascension du Kilimanjaro pour recueillir des fonds pour l’UNICEF. La montée jusqu’au pic Uhuru, qui est à 5896 mètres, prendra 6 jours (si je réussis!) Mon but est d’amasser au moins 602$ x 3. 602$ est le coût de l’installation d’une pompe à eau pour une communauté entière. L’installation d’une telle pompe réduit le temps consacré à la collecte d’eau par les femmes et les enfants et augmente donc la probabilité de présence à l’école des enfants. Si je n’atteins pas mon objectif, vos dons seront néanmoins bien utiles. Chaque 20$ versé vers cette cause procure 3 mois de comprimés de purification d’eau pour une personne et chaque 53$ procure une trousse de purification pour une famille entière. The idea of climbing Kilimanjaro came to me when reading Greg Mortenson's book, Three Cups of Tea. Greg Mortenson grew up on the slopes of Kilimanjaro and ascended the mountain at the ripe age of 12. He is now the co-founder of the Central Asia Institute, "which promotes community-based education and literacy programs, especially for girls, in remote mountain regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan." With this project, I link water to Mortenson's goal for education, as every water pump installed in a community increases the likelihood of children going to school.
